Understanding keyword traffic estimates
Reference material — the calculator above stays the primary tool.
What this estimates
This estimates the sessions a single keyword can send: its monthly search volume multiplied by the click-through rate you expect at your likely ranking position. It sizes one keyword rather than a whole channel, which is what keyword selection actually requires.
Volume alone is a trap — a high-volume keyword you rank tenth for sends less traffic than a modest one you own outright.
How to read your result
The headline is estimated traffic at your expected CTR. The scenario lens then projects it at a benchmark and optimized CTR, showing the sessions a better position would add for that keyword.
Use it to compare keyword opportunities on realistic capture, not raw volume.
Choosing keywords
Volume is only one dimension. Treat these as orientation.
| Context | Typical median |
|---|---|
| High volume, high difficulty | Slow, uncertain capture |
| Mid volume, low difficulty | Often best return |
| Long tail | Low volume, high intent |
| Branded | High CTR, existing demand |
Levers that increase keyword traffic
Rank higher, or pick keywords you can realistically win. Difficulty matters as much as volume: a winnable mid-volume keyword usually returns more than an unwinnable head term. Model a higher CTR as a scenario above.
Estimate with intent in mind
Read this alongside keyword conversion value, which the related tools cover. Traffic is not the goal — a lower-volume keyword with commercial intent often outperforms a bigger informational one, so pair volume with value.
