Understanding direct traffic

Reference material — the calculator above stays the primary tool.

What direct traffic measures

Direct traffic is the sessions with no referrer, split here across typed or bookmarked visits, untagged email and app traffic, and other direct. Part of it is genuine brand demand; part is mis-attributed traffic that lost its source. Summing its sources gives both the channel total and the mix beneath it, so you can see not just how much direct traffic you have but where within the channel it originates.

Traffic sits at the top of the funnel, so this channel's level and growth bound every conversion and dollar that follows from it.

How to read your result

The headline is current direct traffic. The scenario lens then projects it at a benchmark and an optimized monthly growth rate, pricing the gap in concrete sessions so a growth target for the channel is explicit.

Use the source split to see which part of the channel to lean on.

Direct traffic sources

The channel's sub-sources behave differently. Treat these as orientation.

ContextTypical median
Typed / bookmarkGenuine brand demand
Untagged email / appMis-attributed, taggable

Levers that grow the channel

Real direct grows with brand strength; the rest shrinks with better tracking. Tag campaign and email links so mis-attributed direct moves to its true source, and build brand to lift genuine direct. Model a higher growth rate as a scenario above to see the sessions it adds.

In context

Read direct traffic alongside referral and social traffic, which the related tools cover. Inflated direct often hides untagged campaigns, so fixing tracking sharpens every other channel's numbers too.
